- Description:
- T1 - Eucalyptus - remove - tree has been historically reduced several times in the past to try and maintain at a reasonable size for location, and to limit shade cast into neighbouring properties. Unfortunately the tree is now of poor natural form, and aesthetically no longer adds to the location. The tree grows very fast and is far too tall for its setting, particularly given its very close proximity to the surrounding houses and gardens that are used regularly by neighbours and playing children. The canopy is spreading far out over neighbouring properties and causing a nuisance from falling debris. The tree causes danger to the neighbouring houses and gardens, which is particularly alarming in windy conditions - the tree sways significantly and if blown over it would cause substantial property damage plus risk of injury to residents (including children playing in neighbouring gardens). The application is for the removal of the eucalyptus tree. It is not a noticeable feature from Berks Hill and does not contribute to the character and appearance of the conservation area. The tree grows very vigorously and far too tall, making it wholly unsuitable for the site. It is not a native species, is not rare and has no particular environmental merit. If it is kept, the tree can only be safely managed by being significantly cut back every 2 years, which entails the inconvenience and expense of a planning application each time. If required, I would be happy to accept a condition that another tree be planted in the same location of a different species that is more suitable for the surroundings than the existing over-sized eucalyptus. The neighbours most closely affected by the outcome of this application live at the neighbouring 20a Berks Hill, and the tree has grown over and overshadows their garden. A draft of this application has been shared with them and they have indicated their full support for it. I have also discussed the application with the neighbours opposite...
